Self Publishing: The Grave of Zeros

Your new e-book isn’t selling and you don’t know why. You’re not alone. You need to know the scale of the problem before tackling a way ahead. Part of a data heavy series on self-publishing.

In my first post in this series I highlighted the main problem authors face is not writing/editing but getting their work seen and read. So in this post I intend going through the basic numbers surrounding on-line fiction e-book sales.

We will start with some shocking statistics. There will be many more to follow in following posts. But if you are going to devote hours and hours of your life to writing then you need to know where you stand. You cannot address a problem like this unless you understand it. That’s the whole reason I first looked at this data myself.

A Look into the Grave of Zeros

This set of estimates is for is for Amazon KDP. You you can be pretty sure it will be much the same for Barnes&Noble (Nook) as well.

Garve of Zeros. Zero Sales Statistics for 2026

Depressing isn’t it?

But it gets worse. (Don’t worry – it DOES get better later! But not today.).

I must emphasise we need to deal with this bad news up-front so we know where we stand. We cannot hope to address a problem like this and attempt to find a fix or work-round until we know what we are dealing with.

Almost all authors simply do not have a clue about the statistics surrounding on-line fiction sales. That is one of the reasons a huge number of them won’t ever stand a chance of selling even twenty copies. Let alone make a reasonable return on their investment of time, energy and sweat.

Next post we will get into the real meat and potatoes of the statistics surrounding on-line fiction e-book sales.
